The Waste Atlas of Palestine (WAP) is an advanced, open-access platform designed to provide comprehensive data on municipal solid waste management across the West Bank and Gaza Strip. This interactive tool enables users to visualize and analyze data on waste generation, disposal methods, and environmental risks at the national, governorate, and community levels. With detailed information on waste composition, per capita waste production, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and opportunities for resource recovery, WAP places a strong emphasis on sustainable practices such as composting, recycling, and biogas production, supporting a shift toward circular waste management.
As a critical resource for decision-makers, researchers, and waste management professionals, WAP equips users with actionable data to foster sustainable waste practices, optimize infrastructure planning, and minimize environmental impacts. Additionally, the platform engages the public by increasing awareness of local waste management challenges and promoting community involvement in sustainable solutions.
The atlas integrates data from various national and international sources, ensuring accuracy and relevance. Key Palestinian sources include the Ministry of Local Government, the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, the Environmental Quality Authority, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Palestinian Water Authority, and the Water Sector Regulatory Council, as well as the Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission. For emissions data, biogas production, and other metrics, WAP also draws on global expertise, including resources from the United Nations Environment Programme, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and the International Solid Waste Association. By blending national insights with international standards and best practices, WAP offers an invaluable resource to drive effective and sustainable waste management strategies.
